Finding God At CrossFit

Good morning, Church, and welcome! This month, Pastor John is on vacation and our messages are going to come from a series of previously recorded sermons on vocation and imaging God through the things we do. Our first topic is CrossFit and exercise, and we will be looking at how we image God when we push ourselves in a healthy way to the edge of what we are physically capable of. It is truly remarkable how God has created our bodies, and equally amazing the things that we are physically capable of. Many of John’s messages focus on the science behind how our bodies move, but today he is talking about the act of moving in and of itself, as well as the mental side of exercise as the commitment to finishing a race or improving on a circuit training time requires perseverance and mental fortitude. As we learn and think about these things today, I pray that we would come to know and love God more through acknowledging the beauty and the genius in creation.

“My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:2-4, NRSV).

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart” (Hebrews 12:1-3, NRSV).

Fix My Eyes – Kings Kaleidoscope

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is light with you. For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:1-14, ESV).
