Engaging God’s Ever Present Comfort

Good morning Church, and welcome! This week, Pastor John is preaching on Psalm 23 and we are talking about living into the comfort, joy, and rest that God has for us. Psalm 23 says this:

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long” (Psalm 23:1-6, NRSV).

Church, as we worship today, let us remember that the God who created the green pastures, the still waters, the right paths and the lavish table is the same God who knows, created, and cares for us. Our God fosters growth in the shadow of the dark valleys, and draws us close in the midst of storms and winds. God knows our needs, our struggles, our thoughts and our feelings, and sits with us through it all. When we’re going through hard times, when we are at our worst, when we feel overcome by the darkness, in all those places we can rest and know that we are seen, heard, and cared for deeply by the God who is with us through it all.

Church, like ivy grows up walls, or a tomato plant clings to a steak in the ground, since we have been supported by our mighty God let us grow, learn, and move in the directions in which we have been called. As Pastor John is beginning a “new class” on being prepared for God’s infinite rest and wonder, let us join him in this new venture. I pray that we would be seeking God not simply because we need salvation and redemption in the present, but let us also for the sake and pursuit of the eventual rest and joy that we have been promised. As our good, gift-giving God is preparing a place for us, I pray that we would be committed to growing towards the goodness that God has instore for us. Together, let us strive to take advantage of the peace, security, and joy that God has promised us so that we can more fully grow and discover God’s good creation.

“At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”” (Matthew 11:25-30, NRSV).
